Should I Call Them About a Citation?

Short answer: you rarely have to volunteer it, and you must never deny it. Most policies do not require you to report a citation the moment it happens. What they do require is truthful answers on applications and at renewal — and those questions come around soon enough.

They are going to see it anyway

Carriers pull motor vehicle records. Not necessarily today, but at renewal, and certainly when you apply somewhere new. A conviction that reached the DMV is on a record they can order, and the idea that a ticket stays private is a comfortable fiction.

The realistic question is therefore not whether they find out. It is whether the version they find matches the version you gave them.

Where the real risk sits

Not in the ticket. In the answer. Giving a false answer to a direct question on an application is a material misstatement, and it hands the carrier grounds to re-rate the policy or to challenge it — usually at the point you are making a claim. A surcharge you can pay. A contested policy at claim time is a different order of problem.

Times you probably should call

Times it can generally wait

An ordinary moving violation with no collision, no injury and no license consequence. Note it, deal with the court, and answer honestly at renewal. Phoning to announce it does not earn credit and does not delay anything.

If traffic school is on the table

An eligible completion can keep a conviction off the record ordinary parties are able to see. Eligibility is decided by the court and the DMV rather than by you or your insurer, and it is not offered every time. Ask the court that issued the citation.

What we would actually do

Write it down — the date, the violation, the outcome, and whether traffic school was completed — and keep it with the policy documents. When the renewal question comes, you answer it from a note rather than from memory. That is the whole discipline, and it takes two minutes.

If someone is on your policy as a household driver, the same applies to their citations. Their record is part of your policy's picture whether or not the conversation is comfortable.

Tickets from other states

A citation collected on holiday does not stay in that state. States share driver information with each other, and a conviction elsewhere can find its way onto your California record. Assume it will, answer honestly if asked, and do not treat an out-of-state ticket as a private matter that resolves itself. Pay attention to the deadline in particular — ignoring a citation from four states away is how people end up with a failure-to-appear attached to a license they need for work, over a fine they would happily have paid.

More of what callers ask

Will my rate go up as soon as I report a ticket?

Rating changes generally happen at renewal rather than mid-term. What happens then depends on the violation, the carrier and the rest of your record.

What if I forget to disclose a ticket?

Correct it as soon as you notice. An honest correction is a straightforward conversation. A discovered omission during a claim is not.

Does a parking ticket count?

Parking citations are not moving violations and do not become part of your driving record the same way. Unpaid ones can still create registration problems, which is a separate issue.
