Does My Policy Work in Mexico?
Short answer: generally no. A California auto policy is not accepted as the liability coverage Mexico requires, and this is the one border question where guessing has genuinely serious consequences.
What Mexico requires
Liability coverage issued by an insurer authorised in Mexico. Your US policy, whatever its limits, doesn't satisfy that. Mexican tourist auto policies are sold specifically for this — at border agencies, online in advance, and often through your own agent.
Why it matters more than a coverage gap usually does
A collision in Mexico is handled under Mexican law and process. Being unable to demonstrate recognized liability coverage at the scene is a much more serious position to be in than it would be at home. This isn't a scare story; it's the reason experienced border-region drivers treat the policy as non-negotiable rather than optional.
What your US policy might still do
Some carriers extend limited physical damage coverage a short distance into Mexico, and some don't extend anything at all. It is entirely company-specific — ask yours directly, and get the answer for the specific distance and duration you're planning. Never assume the extension exists because a friend's carrier had one.
Buying it
- Buy before you cross, not at the first opportunity afterwards.
- Match the length of the policy to the length of the trip — day policies and multi-day policies both exist.
- Carry the document in the vehicle, in printed form.
- Check whether the policy includes legal assistance, which is a meaningful part of what these products provide.
The frequent-crosser version
If you cross regularly, an annual Mexican policy usually costs less than repeated short-term ones and removes the chance of forgetting on a spontaneous trip.

Arrange it before you cross, not at the border
Short-term policies are straightforward to buy in advance, and doing it beforehand means you can read what you are getting rather than deciding in a queue. Carry the documentation with you. If your car is financed, check the loan or lease terms too — some restrict taking the vehicle out of the country, which is a separate issue from insurance and easier to discover now than at the crossing.

Does my US policy work just across the border?
Not for the liability coverage Mexico requires. Some carriers extend limited physical damage a short distance — ask yours specifically rather than assuming.
Where do I buy Mexican insurance?
Online in advance, at border agencies, or through your own agent. Buying before you cross is the part that matters.
Is a day policy enough?
For a day trip, often. If you cross regularly, an annual policy usually costs less overall and removes the risk of forgetting.
